Manukau Square Redevelopment

Dempsey Wood was the main contractor, working with Isthmus Group as the designers, on this high-profile urban space project that achieved the desired outcome of transforming the heart of Manukau’s city centre into a modern, attractive urban environment for public use.

Key aspects of the scope of works include clay paving, timber platforms and boardwalks, extension of the feeder road and installation of streetlights and furniture.

The square measures approximately 2,500m2 and works were carried out “next door” to Manukau City Council’s offices and adjacent to the retail centre, requiring very high levels of stakeholder liaison and pedestrian and traffic management.

Dempsey Wood was praised for helping to reduce the cost of the initial design, taking on-board design changes that occurred even in cases where rework was necessary, going the extra step in pushing along contractors who were outside their contract and facilitating project management through our very cooperative and organised approach to this project, which – in the words of the Council's Project Manager, Neville Price, "made what could have been a very fraught project surprisingly easy to manage"
